Networking Carnival

For those of you interested in job search tips, you should definitely check out today’s edition of the Networking Carnival, hosted over at Jason Alba’s JibberJobber Blog.

Legal Andrew was lucky enough to be included in this edition, featuring my post on business cards for students.

One of my favorite posts is by George Blomgren, who writes on what to do if you just lost your job.

The coolest part of being included in the Networking Carnival is that …

Legal Networking Through Professional Orgs

There is a great post over at Lifehack.org about the virtues of "professional volunteering." This is a great introduction to the concept of networking by volunteering for professional organizations. Of note for people in the legal profession, this would probably include organizations like the local bar association and specialized groups depending upon your practice area.

From the article:
… [O]nce you’re safe and sound in a position you’re okay with, you can use volunteering to build a powerful network and increase your marketability. … My advice if you’d like to …

Referral Fees – To Pay or Not to Pay?

As the attorneys out there know, we have particular rules about sharing fees with people who aren’t attorneys. It’s one HUGE area that has surprised me in my young legal career.

Here’s my take: referrals fees are allowed in Virginia; I receive them, and I’m happy to pay them.

That single sentence may cause a lot of tension, but I’ll back it up.

Virginia allows referral fees

Virginia used to prohibit referral fees. If lawyers shared fees, they had to be taking on responsibility for the matter. You could have a co-counsel relationship and split the fee, but you couldn’t simply pay a fee …

Simplicity – Why I Deleted My Plaxo Account

How many social networks are you a member of? Personally, I’m on way too many to count.

Do we really need them all? Probably not.

Here’s a quick simplicity challenge for you: pick one social networking site and delete your account.

I just deleted my Plaxo account (here’s how to delete yours). I chose to delete Plaxo because:

1. I rarely logged in. In fact, I only logged in to accept someone’s connection request.

2. I got fed up with all the connection request emails and emails telling me that the requests were …

In a nutshell, it’s an online university where law students and lawyers can learn a wide variety of topics related to running a successful solo law practice. There are courses, faculty, discussion groups, blogs, videos, comments, and lots more!

Referral Marketing Books Reviewed and Rated

As a business owner, I’ve been trying to build my base of incoming referrals. I get very few clients from referrals, and I want to change that!

Referral marketing is a basic way of building business that’s all about word of mouth. But true referral marketing uses a system to consistently obtain referrals. It’s not just a clumsily relying on people to occasionally drop your name.

To beef up my referral marketing, I checked out three books from the local library. I want to share my thoughts on …

Business Card Idea – Keep It Simple

Every so often I come across a business card idea that I love. The above card is one of those.

Sure, this playing card business card is tacky. But it’s memorable. And for some professions, it just might do the trick. With the right person behind the card, I think it would be fun to receive.

How could you make this neater? Print on the playing card with your inkjet printer. Or find a place where you could just buy a bunch of Aces, and …
