Central Computer System Could Aid Law Firm Security

I just ran across an interesting computer system. Instead of your firm’s lawyers each having their computer at their desk, you can house everything in a central, secure location. That is one of the benefits ClearCube’s Thin Client computers.
Basically, the system works by having a nifty little computer “blade” (pictured at right) for each user. These are housed at a central location in your office. Each end user gets a little box on their desk which connects their keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the central computers.
If you have ever used a mainframe / terminal computing system, this is sort-of the same. However, the key difference is that each user still has his own computer; it is just housed somewhere else in the office.
There are three big benefits to this system:
- A central location allows tight security around the hardware and easier disaster prevention & recovery.
- The system is easily monitored and repaired by IT personnel.
- Mobile access devices can tap into the central computers, just like your lawyers’ desktop setup can.
With all that said, I have no idea how much these little gizmos cost. Will the rewards be greater than the costs? I can’t say. Plus, most firms are not going to ditch their entire computer system and upgrade everything all at once. Thus, shifting to a completely different computing model does not seem likely.
But if you’re in the market for some new hardware, you might check it out. Perhaps these things will work for your firm.
